I have a confession to make. I, Sola Onitiri - Philadelphia-style blogger, taco enthusiast, and pop culture nerd - am a skincare JUNKIE. Yep, you heard it here first folks. In fact, I’m so into skincare that I recently chucked all of my foundation to focus on achieving that dewy, glowy, Korean skincare blogger looking skin. This love affair with skincare products is a long and beautiful one. And throughout my many years of trying just about every trendy face mask, milk toner, and DIY exfoliator ever, I’ve cultivated a list of to-dos and to-don’ts. With the help of Geneva Naturals, a skincare brand dedicated to offering natural and effective skin care products that absolutely changed my natural beauty game for life, I came up with a list of skin care commandments that everyone needs to get their face sparkling.
1. Know Thy Skin
First things, first - you should know your skin like you know your favorite song. When it comes to taking care of your skin, make mental notes about what makes your skin breakout and sparkle. This process takes a little time, but as soon as you know the things that trigger your skin, you’ll be well on your way to creating a solid routine which leads to amazing skin.
2. Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate
There’s no other way to put this so I’ll keep it short and sweet. Water’s dope, you need water to be dope, so drink some water. Capece?
3. Be Gentle
If you want to get serious about your skincare routine you need to get serious about what goes in the products you’re using. Some products have yucky chemicals that shouldn’t go down your drain never mind your face. That’s why I’m in love with Geneva Naturals’ products. They all have no parabens, phthalates, sulfates, and unnecessary chemicals that leave the skin dry and flaky. Another huge aspect of being gentle with your skin is remembering to not roughly tug and scrub your face. Take the time to lightly massage the products into your face and let them do their magic.
4. Keep it real
Being gentle to your skin goes hand in hand with keeping it real. And by real, I mean picking products that have natural goodies in them. Natural ingredients and essential oils are the OG remedies to most skin care issues, so when you’re shopping look out for the real stuff. My new skin care obsession from Geneva, The Advanced Vitamin C + E , is jam-packed with natural ingredients like 20% Vitamin C and Edelweiss, a special anti-aging plant that grows in the Swiss Alps, Coconut Oil, Moringa Oil and Vitamin E. All of these ingredients help my skin stay balanced, fresh, and smooth.
5. Mind the sun
Let’s really dive into the nitty gritty. If you want even, smooth, airbrushed looking skin, you need to step your SPF game *DJ Khaled Voice* All the way up. I mean it. Don’t be running these streets without SPF, because it’s sure way to get uneven, flaky skin and no one wants that. Get a moisturizer with SPF 30 or higher for longer and broader spectrum protection. If you’ve been skimping out on your SPF (Guilt as charged myself) use brightening toners and face masks with Vitamin C or hydroquinone to restore your skin back to its rightful glory.
6. You’re not too young for a good serum
Eye creams and serums always seemed like a thing that I was too young for. After falling head over heels for my Geneva Naturals serum, I wish I could go back in time and slap myself for ever thinking that. A good serum can change your entire life. That may seem like an exaggeration, but trust me it's not. A good serum (I put 'good' there to remind you of commencements three and four) acts as a skin antioxidant that helps defend your skin from smog, UV Rays and other unavoidable environmental stuff that can harm the skin. Serums also help keep your face looking bright, tight, and generally alright. I’ll talk about when to use this in your routine in a second.
7. Work on your routine
Alright, this is the part of the commandments where your should go and get a pen and a legal pad because I’m about to take you to skin care school. If you want to rock make up free, clear and even skin, you have to come up with a morning and evening routine that fits your skin and your lifestyle. Not everyone has time to get facials every week and use bottles of uber expensive eye cream made from unicorn blood. But even if you don’t have time and resources you can still create a solid routine which should include a cleanser, toner, exfoliator, serum and moisturizer with SPF in the morning.
8. TAKE OFF YOUR MAKEUP
Last but not least and for the love of god, take off your make up. Keeping makeup all up in your pores is not a good look for your skin and for your health. Your skin needs to breathe and recover. My rule of thumb is: it should take the same amount of time to put on your makeup as it takes to remove it.
